Mathana Balan

Mathana is a trained and registered Educational Therapist who comes with 11 years of onsite experience with students with Specific Learning Difficulties. Mathana is also registered with the Register of Educational Therapists Asia, Singapore (RETA).

Since 2011, she has provided individual and group therapy to individuals ranging from five to 19 years old. They come in with needs such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and Non-Verbal Learning Difficulties), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Executive Dysfunction, Social Communication Disorder (SCD), Language Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Selective Mutism, General Development Disorder (GDD), as well as individuals with Social and Emotional Behavioural Disorders (SEBD) and more.

Mathana is a skilled and trained Orton Gillingham practitioner, using the approach to design and execute lesson plans for a range of students with phonological, reading, spelling, writing and numerical challenges. She believes that each person is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is her desire as an educator to help individual meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that she believes are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the individual's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, (3) promoting respect for all things and people.

Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. Developing a lesson around an individual's interests, fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. When they have ownership in their own work, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals.

Mathana is a trained Indian classical and contemporary dancer who is actively involved in the performance/media arts. She enjoys exploring outdoors and gardening with her two year son.
